Monday and Tuesday

Monday on my way to work I stopped at QFC and bought a Bolthouse Salted Caramel protein drink for breakfast for $1.99. Jeremy was off work and went to Grocery Outlet where he bought 26 protein bars and nine bottles of Mio for $24.55. We also stopped at QFC on the way home and bought milk, bananas, vanilla cookie butter, and a beverage. I cannot find the receipt but we spent around $7.

When I got home I made pasta with a pouch of pre cooked spicy beef, a can of diced tomatoes, a little chili garlic sauce, and colby jack cheese sauce.

Breakfast: salted caramel latte protein drink
Lunch: last of the leftover sloppy lentils on buttermilk bread, apple, clementine
Dinner: pasta with beef, tomatoes and cheese sauce
Snacks/desserts: banana with vanilla cookie butter
Beverages: water

On Tuesday Jeremy got cataract surgery after work. I had a few hours to wait, and I was pretty hungry so I went to Chipotle, which is close by. It had been five years since I had eaten there last, so I did not know they have tofu burritos now, but they do. And they are pretty good. I also got a soft drink and spent $11.55 total. After that I still had lots of time. I bought a box of Good N' Plenty candies at QFC for $1.00. They were always one of my dad's favorite candies, and I also love them.

The surgery went fine, although it was more complicated than they expected it to be. Jeremy insisted on walking the half mile back home, despite mine and the nurse's reservations. Thankfully that went fine. He had not eaten since before 7 am and it was at that point 4 pm. We stopped at Bartell's and he bought an energy drink and we bought three of those Russell Stover Santa candies, for a total of $2.62. Jeremy got a marshmallow caramel one and I got red velvet ones for Winter and I.

After that big lunch and tons of candy, I really wasn't hungry for dinner. Winter had already made herself some pasta after school and wasn't hungry either. Jeremy grazed on cereal, fruit, and peanut butter and went to bed early, and I had a banana with cookie butter later on.

Breakfast: caramel Mediterranean yogurt with sliced banana and walnuts
Lunch: tofu burrito with guacamole, rice, black beans, pico, sour cream and cheese
Dinner: banana with vanilla cookie butter
Snacks/desserts: Good N Plenty candy, red velvet chocolate Santa
Beverages: Sprite mixed with lemonade, water

Saturday and Sunday

I have like five days I need to post still, so I'll try to be succinct. Saturday Jeremy got off work early. He walked to Safeway to get us a Field Roast for Fake Christmas. Fake Christmas is Friday the 19th because Winter leaves for Tuscon to spend the holidays with her father's family the next morning. They both revolted over having turkey for Thanksgiving as they love Field Roast and it's usually something reserved for special occasions. I love Field Roast too. Not gonna lie. Jeremy bought a 2 lb roast for $12.99.

He met me after work and I bought a can of black beans for $1.00, and some frozen seasoned potatoes and green beans for $2.50 at QFC. I called ahead and had Winter make brown rice. When I got home I threw everything into a skillet with some olive oil and shredded jack cheese, and we ate. For such a hodge podge of flavors it was pretty good.

Breakfast: protein bar
Lunch: coffee Greek yogurt, apple with caramel cream cheese, clementine
Dinner: Brown rice, black beans, seasoned potatoes and green beans, olive oil, jack cheese
Snacks/desserts: Clementine
Beverages: water

Sunday was a day off. One of my friends I have known for a very long time is leaving the state at the end of the year, so Winter and I made plans to spend a few hours with him Sunday. Jeremy didn't want to go. We went to Azteca and split the tab there. Our half with tip and tax was $27.16. After lunch we went for a walk through a nearby graveyard.

When we got back downtown we stopped off at one of the malls. Winter was wanting to visit the by-the-pound candy store. We bought about $8.00 worth of assorted gummy candies, and I took some home for Jeremy. We also found a new item in the food court. A fresh squeezed orange juice  vending machine. It cuts the fruit and squeezes the juice while you watch. It was $3.00 for a cup, but we both get so excited over fancy vending machines, we had to try it. We split a cup. It was really good. More clear and tart than bottles juice.

We unsurprisingly were not all that hungry for dinner so we just ate leftovers/cereal. Winter ate some leftovers from her lunch.

Breakfast: caramel Mediterranean yogurt, protein bar
Lunch: chips and salsa, chicken burrito
Dinner: cereal and milk, clementine
Snacks/desserts: praline frozen yogurt, gummy candies
Beverages: Sprite, orange juice

Never doubt that there is so much kindness in the world

I want to share a story. A few weeks ago I joined a local freecycle type group on Facebook. That's where we got a big bottle of sugar free chocolate syrup the Sunday before last, and I've also found new homes for some pots and pans and a half bottle of banana liqueur I am not fond of. But today something extraordinary happened.

For the last week I have been posting all over the place asking pretty much anyone who might have even the slightest connection with us if anyone would be interested in being tested as a potential kidney donor for Jeremy. I'd gotten a few volunteers so far, more than I really expected, and that in and of itself made me optimistic.

They told us, at the transplant center, to ask everyone, because you never know who will step forward if asked, and that has already been proving to be true. Nothing could have prepared me for what happened today. I sent a PM to the mod of the freecycle type group to ask if it would be within the rules of the group to post a request for possible kidney donors. She told me to go for it. So I did.

Within minutes of making that post I had a PM from someone who wanted a copy of the donor packet. It is now 10pm, and at last count I have had 13 people ask me for it. I do not know these people. They are all strangers to us. The only connection I have with any of them is that we belong to the same community group on Facebook. But each of them cares enough about the life of a total stranger that they are seriously willing to give up a vital organ of their own for him.

When I made that post I expected maybe one person to respond, if I was lucky. I was and still am completely overwhelmed by the response I got. On top of that a good family friend from my childhood started a GoFundMe to help us with expenses today, and she is also willing to get tested as a potential donor even though she's never met my husband. And in addition to people contacting me about being a potential donor, I've also been getting a lot of messages of general support, prayers, and positive thoughts, which are so very meaningful to me.

I wish I had something profound to say to end this, but I don't. I'm a fairly optimistic person anyway, but this experience has shocked me to my core.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday I lounged around too long before leaving for work, and didn't pack a lunch. I went to QFC at lunchtime and bought a Marie Callender' s frozen entree with chicken strips and mac and cheese for $2.00. I also got a banana for $.28. I also spent $4.24 at Menchie's.

Jeremy met me after work and we went to QFC again and bought whole wheat buns for $1.49, a medium sized bag of sour cream and cheddar potato chips for $1.49, and a peach flavored sugar free sparkling water for $.89.

When we got home I made lentil sloppy joes. After doing this a few times I recommend boiling and draining the lentils and then adding them to the sauce. Otherwise the acids slow the cooking time way down. In my sauce I used ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, brown sugar, honey barbeque sauce, and a finely shredded carrot. The carrot cooks down a lot and carmelizes in the sauce, so it's barely noticeable in the finished product. It doesn't taste anything like carrots. Dried onion would be good too, but I keep forgetting to buy it.

Breakfast: skipped
Lunch: chicken strips, macaroni and cheese, banana
Dinner: lentil sloppy joes on whole wheat buns with colby jack cheese, sour cream and cheddar potato chips
Snacks/desserts: mini candy canes, caramel and mint chocolate cookie frozen yogurt with cream cheese icing and cookie dough balls
Beverages: water, peach sparkling water

Friday Winter stayed home sick from school and didn't go to art class either. When I got home from work I watched Miss Congeniality with her. We had various leftovers for dinner. Jeremy bought her some chicken noodle soup and Sprite at Rite Aid. He spent about $5.00.

He met me at work and on the way home we stopped at QFC and bought:

3 boxes of various cereal ($1.49 each) $4.47
Granola bars $1.49
Praline frozen yogurt: $2.99
4 lb bag of clementines $3.99
2 bags of reduced clementines (about 6 or 7 per bag at $.99 each) $1.98
Arnold Palmer drink $.99

Total: $16.01

Breakfast: caramel Mediterranean yogurt with walnuts
Lunch: lentil sloppy joe on whole wheat with cheddar, apple clementine, cinnamon roll cookie
Dinner: lentil sloppy joe on buttermilk bread with cheddar cheese, Clementine
Snacks/desserts: brownie ice cream and praline frozen yogurt with sugar free chocolate syrup and walnuts
Beverages: water

Tuesday at the doctor, and Wednesday

On Tuesday Jeremy had a day long series of appointments at the Swedish transplant center. I took the day off work and went with him. There was a class about kidney transplantation, meetings with a doctor, a surgeon, a financial person, a social worker, and they took lots and lots of blood.

This wasn't even quite all of it.
Afterwards they did an abdominal scan and a chest x-ray. He has one or two more tests left to do before he is cleared for transplant, but they told us to go ahead and start looking for live donors now as they don't foresee any problems with his tests.

We stopped at Bartell's on the way there. Jeremy got an energy drink, and I got a package of two hard boiled eggs, which cost a total of $2.49. I also ate a yogurt before we left.

By the time he was done with his labs it was almost two and I was starving. We went to the McDonald's across the street. I had brought a coupon for buy one get one free premium salad or wrap. Jeremy got a grilled chicken wrap, and I got a southwest crispy chicken salad. He also got a snack wrap, and I got a small fries which we shared, and we got two small drinks. We spent a total of $11.14 there. Not bad as we are both pretty big eaters and were both very hungry.

Later that evening we went to QFC and bought:

3 lb bag of small honeycrisp apples $5.99
Brownie ice cream $2.99
1/2 gallon 2% milk $1.99
Sugar free sparkling water $1.00
Gummy bears $.99
Broccoli $1.55

Total $14.51

I made a chicken and vegetable stir fry with brown rice for dinner, and had brownie ice cream with sugar free chocolate syrup and walnuts for dessert.

Breakfast: caramel flavored Mediterranean yogurt, two hard boiled eggs
Lunch: McDonald's Southwest crispy chicken salad, fries
Dinner: stir fried chicken, broccoli and carrots with brown rice and teriyaki sauce
Snacks/desserts: gummy bears, brownie ice cream with chocolate sauce and walnuts
Beverages: water, Sprite, sugar free sparkling water

Wednesday we didn't buy any food. I was off work and had a couple of appointments but didn't do much. The weather was nasty.

Breakfast: protein bar
Lunch: Campbell's cheeseburger soup, apple with caramel cream cheese
Dinner: macaroni and cheese with carrots and broccoli
Snacks/desserts: brownie ice cream with chocolate sauce and walnuts
Beverages: water
